September has arrived

September has arrived, and with it comes the autumn frenzy and the quiet reflection. I’m so happy it is finally autumn. Maybe not officially if you go by the autumn equinox, but it’s only one week away, so to me it counts. The second September starts, I’ve already decided it’s fall.

(Also, this is my first diary? Personal essay? Rambling? Post? I don’t really know what to call it, but hiii, I’m so glad you’re here!)

Anyway, lately I’ve been trying to slow down more. To notice things and see all the little possibilities in an ordinary day. I feel like it’s so easy to go through the motions and completely miss the tiny changes happening around you, especially when one season is slowly turning into another.

I’ve been noticing how the sunlight comes through my window differently now as the sun shifts, and how the trees are just barely starting to turn brown. As well as the crisp rainy days, the kind where everything outside looks greener afterward and the earth feels completely renewed.

It’s been a while since I really stopped to notice those things, and it feels very refreshing to be aware of how much life is happening around me all the time.

The other day I found a pinecone that had been completely stripped of its seeds, clearly the work of squirrels getting ready for winter. It was such a tiny thing, but I probably would have walked right past it before. I like noticing things like that again.

I think that’s part of why I love fall so much. Everything changes so visibly. The light changes, the air changes, the trees change, and suddenly I want to make things and bake things and watch movies and read for hours and generally make my room as cozy as humanly possible.

I really want to make more things this autumn. I’m not entirely sure what yet, which is kind of the fun of it. I want to bake, make little crafts, try recipes I’ve been saving, and actually do some of the things I always say I’m going to do once fall comes around.

I also want to watch way more fall movies than I did last year.

I’ve already watched two so far, Practical Magic and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, both of which I proceeded to bawl my eyes out over, so clearly my fall movie season is going very well.

I made myself an entire fall movie menu this year and then went slightly insane at the library. I think I rented like 14 movies???

So yeah….

Can you tell I love fall?

There are stacks of DVDs waiting for me now, and I’m planning on slowly making my way through them over the next few weeks. I love having an actual physical movie to put on at night instead of scrolling forever trying to decide what to watch. It makes movie night feel a little more special.

Another very important September development is my tea of the week, which has been pumpkin spice tea. It’s literally so good at night with some sugar and a little bit of cream. Especially when it’s raining outside or I have a movie on.

Literally fall heaven.

I’ve also been fully committing to the autumn soundtrack. I set my morning alarm to The Great Pumpkin Waltz, and it is genuinely one of the most magical things to wake up to. I’ve been spinning the record too, because if there is one thing I absolutely love about fall, it’s the It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown soundtrack.

It makes everything feel like October even though October is still weeks away.

Also, my mom made roast beef with vegetables yesterday and it was SO good. Like, possibly the best fall meal ever. I love cozy food like that once autumn starts. Give me roast beef, soup, fresh bread, cinnamon rolls, anything warm and comforting and I’m happy. I think half of my excitement for cooler weather is honestly just all the food I associate with it lol.

Now I’m just waiting for the weather to catch up with me. I want those mornings where you open the door and the air is actually cold. I want to wear sweaters again without regretting it approximately ten minutes later. I want rainy afternoons and leaves all over the sidewalks and an unreasonable number of cups of tea.

Mostly, though, I think I want to actually be here for this autumn.

Not just make a list of everything I want to do, blink, and realize it’s suddenly December. I want to notice the sunlight moving across my room. I want to notice the trees changing one at a time. I want to watch my ridiculous stack of library movies, make things with my hands, bake when I feel like baking, and enjoy all the tiny signs that the season is changing.

Maybe that’s what these little diary posts can be for too. Just somewhere to put the things I noticed and loved before I forget them.

Anyway, this was a bit of a ramble, but I think that might be the point. ♡

I hope y’all liked my first little diary post! I’d love to know what your favorite thing about fall is, or what tea or drink you’ve been loving lately. I’m always looking for another one to try!!!

Love,
 Ruby ♡
